Martin Kearney appointed as Auckland One Rail (AOR) CEO

AOR is delighted to introduce Martin as our CEO

Martin will be known to many in the industry already, having previously overseen the introduction of the fleet of 3-car EMUs onto Auckland’s then newly electrified rail network. In this role, he implemented a new high frequency timetable, which successfully doubled passenger capacity in some areas.

Originally from the UK, Martin has more than 30 years’ experience in the transport sector in the UK, Australia and New Zealand.

He began his career at British Rail and first made the move to New Zealand in 2012. Following his Auckland role, he took charge of the Sydney Harbour ferry service, as well as rail businesses in Auckland and Wellington before his most recent role at Tyne and Wear Metro. In this role, he has led the team through the COVID-19 crisis as well as overseeing multimillion-dollar infrastructure projects and the delivery of the first of a new fleet of metro trains. Tyne and Wear Metro also gained the highest recorded customer satisfaction survey result for the helpfulness and friendliness of frontline staff under his watch. 

Martin has a great deal of operational experience with previous roles such as duty control manager, service delivery manager and head of operations to name just a few. He’s developed initiatives that have earnt awards for improving on-board customer experiences and reducing health and safety incidents in the workplace. 

Martin says he’s looking forward to leading AOR in its ongoing growth, with exciting major projects ahead that will change the face of public transport in Auckland.

“My focus is to build strong teams and implement improvements to ensure AOR keeps moving forward as a major contributor to Auckland’s development,” he says.
